Good Keloid Consultant in London
Hi I developed a Keloid scar on my neck after having a cyst removed. Over the last 2 years it has grown quite large and is uncomfortable.
I am looking for a consultant in London who specialises in Keloids. Can anyone recommend a good consultant i can go to to get it removed?
My doctor has started the process for a referral but says that can take anywhere from 3 -12 months. Fortunately I am able to use my partners health insurance for a private consultation.
Google searches mainly bring up Harley St practices. I am not opposed to these but wonder if this is because they have the money to spend on website SEO rather than them being the best.
Any advice would be very welcome.

Many thanks.

RE: Good Keloid Consultant in London
Hi hypnobliss ,

I'm also based in London, and can offer my personal experience. Most Harley St. consultants, as you're probably aware of, are amongst the most expensive in the world. What I found was, they more often than not, they appear to class keloids as cosmetic - without appreciating the pain, itching and general irritation they cause. This in turn dictates to some extent their approach in 'solving the problem' - but as we know, it's not as straightforward as that!

I ended up seeing Dr. Harrison - his website indicates 'Plastic Surgery - Harley Street London'. After assessing my condition and battle with keloids, he was forced to rule out several approaches including plastic surgery and skin grafting due to the reoccurring nature of keloids. Ultimately, the only suggestion he was able to put forward was considering the use pressure garments; I've written more about that here.

Would be interested to hear whether you manage to find someone, and what their thoughts are - please keep us updated?

Good luck!

Thanks,

Good Keloid Consultant in London
Hi c_man,
After asking a few medical professionals I found a doctor who works at Guys Hospital. They have a specialist Dermatology unit. He recommended the usual surgical removal followed by steroid injections. It re-healed slightly raised but much better than before. I also added daily massage to the area after seeing this on YouTube. It supposedly keeps the collagen soft so the steroids can penetrate effectively. I am 6 months into the treatment and can thankfully say the keloid is completely flat and has not returned
He says it is stable now but I will continue to monitor to try to ensure it stays that way!

RE: Good Keloid Consultant in London
I went to an Italian doctor (her name escapes me but she's on Harley street) and had the controversial cyroshape procedure on three keloids about a year ago. It cost 1,000 pounds. I believe the pricing is based on the size of keloid. The procedure worked well for a small keloid I had - it's flattened, and though still discoloured it's not bright red. It didn't work as well on the larger keloids on my best and back. Parts of these keloids flattened a bit but a new leision seems to have appeared on my chest keloid. Itching has also recently returned. The doctor did mention that I might have to come in again if the first treatment didn't completely flatten out the keloids, and I'm likely to do so. The recovery period is a bit of a pain - you've got to take painkillers and the scabbing is absolutely horrendous for a couple of months.

After my last steroid treatment in early 2018 my Keloid was completely flat for over a year but has since started to raise again. I gto another treatment to try to stop it in its tracks. It is now 90% reduced with just a small lump at one end of the original scar. Hopefully I can reduce or keep that at bay with daily massage. Will let you know how that goes.
